Best Time to Fish the Gunnison Gorge: A Complete Seasonal Guide

The Gunnison Gorge is one of Colorado's most legendary fly fishing destinations — and for good reason. This remote wilderness canyon below Black Canyon National Park is a Gold Medal fishery boasting over 7,000 Rainbow and Brown trout per mile, with fish regularly exceeding 20 inches. But like any great fishery, timing your trip makes all the difference between a good day and an unforgettable one.

At Ed's Fly Shop in Montrose, we've been guiding anglers through the Gunnison Gorge for years. Here's our complete breakdown of what to expect season by season.

Spring (March – May): Pre-Runoff Magic

Spring offers some of the Gunnison Gorge's most underrated fishing. Before runoff kicks in — typically March through mid-April — the river runs clear and cold, and trout become increasingly active as water temperatures begin to rise.

What's hatching: Blue-Winged Olives and midges are your best friends in early spring. Fish will be rising on warmer afternoons when BWO hatches come off, making this one of the best times of year for dry fly action on these fish.

Water conditions: Watch the flows closely. Once snowmelt begins in earnest — usually mid-April through May — water levels rise and clarity drops, making fishing more difficult. The pre-runoff window is short but incredibly productive for those who time it right.

Best for: Experienced anglers who can read the water and match subtle hatches.

Early Summer (June): The Famous Stonefly Hatch

June is widely considered the most exciting month to fish the Gunnison Gorge — and it's the heart of our guided trip season for good reason. This is when the legendary Salmonfly and Golden Stonefly hatches occur, bringing some of the most explosive dry fly fishing you'll find anywhere in Colorado.

What's hatching: Salmonflies and Golden Stoneflies dominate. These large insects trigger aggressive surface feeding from even the biggest trout in the river. Casting large stonefly imitations along the banks from a raft is an experience every serious fly angler needs to have at least once.

Water conditions: Flows can still be elevated from runoff in early June but typically stabilize by mid-June, creating ideal floating conditions. The canyon is at its most dramatic and beautiful during this time.

Best for: All skill levels — the aggressive feeding during the stonefly hatch makes this the most forgiving time of year to hook big fish.

Pro tip: Our Gunnison Gorge 3 Day Float Trip dates fill up fast for June. These are BLM-permitted dates and availability is strictly limited — book as early as possible if you want to fish the stonefly hatch.

Summer (July – August): Consistent Action

Once the stonefly hatch winds down, summer settles in with warm days, stable flows, and consistent fishing. This is peak season for the Gorge and a great time for anglers of all experience levels.

What's hatching: Pale Morning Duns, Caddisflies, and Terrestrials. Hopper fishing along the banks can be exceptional in July and August — few things in fly fishing are more exciting than a large Brown trout crushing a hopper pattern in slow water.

Water conditions: Flows stabilize after runoff, creating ideal floating and wading conditions. Water temperatures are comfortable and fish are actively feeding throughout the day.

Best for: Anglers who want a combination of raft fishing and walk-wade opportunities. This is also the best time of year for families or less experienced anglers.

What to expect: Warm days and cool canyon evenings. Layers are essential as temperatures can vary dramatically between the canyon floor and the rim.

Fall (September – October): The Hidden Gem

Many experienced Gorge anglers consider fall their favorite time of year to fish — and it's easy to see why. Crowds thin out dramatically, the canyon walls glow with autumn color, and Brown trout become increasingly aggressive as they prepare to spawn.

What's hatching: Late Caddis, Tricos, and streamers become the go-to approach as water temperatures cool. Aggressive Brown trout will chase large streamer patterns, and nymphing produces consistent action throughout the day.

Water conditions: Flows are typically at their lowest of the year, offering a more serene and intimate experience. Clear, cold water makes for precise, technical fishing.

Best for: Experienced anglers looking for a challenge and solitude. Fall is also the most photogenic time of year in the canyon.

Pro tip: October in particular is a sleeper month — fish are fattening up for winter, pressure is low, and the canyon is stunning. If you can only do one trip in the fall, aim for late September or early October.

Winter (November – February): Leave It to the Locals

While the Gunnison Gorge is technically open year-round, winter brings conditions that make float fishing in the canyon impractical. Cold temperatures, limited sunlight reaching the canyon floor, and icy trails make accessing the Gorge challenging and potentially dangerous.

What's happening: Trout hunker down in deeper, slower water. Midge and Baetis patterns can still produce on warmer days, but the experience is best left to local anglers who know the water intimately.

Our recommendation: If you want to fish the Gunnison in winter, focus on the Lower Gunnison River below the Gorge, which is more accessible and still produces good midge fishing on mild days.
