Ed's Fly Shop is Montrose, Colorado's fly shop and fly fishing guide service. Our fly fishing guides have worked the Gunnison Gorge, the Lower Gunnison, the Uncompahgre and the San Miguel for years, and every guided fly fishing trip we run starts and ends a few minutes from the shop on Main Street. We hold BLM permits for the water we guide, and our guides live here and fish here on their days off.

The Gunnison Gorge is the trip people travel for. It is reachable only on foot or by raft, and it holds more than 7,000 rainbow and brown trout per mile, with fish from 14 to 35 inches. Whether you are floating the Gorge for three days or wading the Lower Gunnison for an afternoon, our guides put you on fish and teach you why they were there.

What types of guided trips do you offer?

We offer multi day wilderness float trips, including the Gunnison Gorge 3 day and the Lower Gunnison 2 day overnight, along with full day and half day float and walk and wade trips. Every trip is available for beginners through advanced anglers.

How much does a guided fly fishing trip cost?

Pricing depends on the trip. Full day walk and wade and float trips start around 300 dollars, the Lower Gunnison full day float is 675 dollars, and our flagship Gunnison Gorge 3 day float is 2,500 dollars, with a Prestige package at 3,250 dollars. Do I need a guide to fish the Gunnison Gorge?

You do not need a guide by law, but most anglers use one. The Gorge has no road access. Getting in means a one mile hike down the Chukar Trail with a 550 foot drop, and getting out means a 14 mile float to Pleasure Park. Private boaters need a BLM permit and their own raft, gear and shuttle. A guided trip handles the permit, the boats, the camp and the meals, and puts an experienced Gorge guide on the oars.

Is gear provided, or do I need my own?

Guided trips include the essentials. Rods, reels, flies, and terminal tackle are provided, and float trips include the boat or raft. You are welcome to bring your own gear. A valid Colorado fishing license is required and can be purchased before your trip.

Are your trips good for beginners?

Yes. Our guides regularly teach first time fly anglers as well as coach experienced casters. Every trip is tailored to your experience level, and instruction is part of the day on the water.
