Float the Lower Gunnison: A Full Day Fly Fishing Adventure from Montrose

If you've never floated the Lower Gunnison River, you're missing one of the finest full-day fly fishing experiences in western Colorado. Gold Medal water. Rainbow and Brown trout that don't come easy. Towering canyon walls, clear cold tailwater, and a drift boat that puts you exactly where the fish are. At Ed's Fly Shop in Montrose, we've been running guided float trips on this stretch for years and it never gets old.

Here's everything you need to know about our Lower Gunnison Full Day Float Trip.

What Makes the Lower Gunnison Special

The Lower Gunnison River below the Gunnison Gorge is a certified Gold Medal fishery, one of only a handful in Colorado. That designation means exceptional trout populations, strict catch-and-release regulations, and fishing that rewards skill and patience.

The river runs cold and clear as a tailwater, meaning it fishes well year-round. You're not at the mercy of runoff the way you are on freestone streams. The big Browns and Rainbows hold tight to shaded banks, riffles, and seams, and a well-presented drift will find them in every season.

The scenery alone is worth the trip. The canyon corridor just before you reach Delta is remote, peaceful, and beautiful in a way that's hard to describe until you've drifted through it.

What's Included in the Full Day Float

Our Lower Gunnison Full Day Float Trip is a complete experience at $650 per boat (up to 2 anglers). Here's what you get:

Full day guided float: Your professional guide handles the oars, reads the water, and puts you in the best positions to find fish all day. You focus on fishing.

Drift boat for 2 anglers: Each boat accommodates 2 anglers for a personalized, comfortable experience with plenty of room to fish.

All terminal tackle & flies: Leader, tippet, and flies are all provided. Bring your own rod and reel or let us know if you need a loaner.

Riverside lunch: We pick up a nice gourmet sandwich and sides to enjoy on the river. Let us know in advance if you have any dietary needs.

Expert instruction: Whether you're a first-timer or a seasoned angler, your guide will tailor the experience to your skill level.

Note: A valid Colorado fishing license is required and not included. Gratuity is not included and is at your discretion.

Best Time of Year to Float the Lower Gunnison

The good news is the Lower Gunnison fishes well year-round. Here's what to expect each season:

Late Spring to Early Summer (May–June)

This is prime time. The famous Stonefly Hatch brings trout aggressively to the surface for some of the most exciting dry fly fishing of the year. Water flows are higher from snowmelt, making the river dynamic and electric. If you can only go once, go in late May or June.

Summer (July–August)

Flows stabilize and conditions are ideal for floating. Warm sunny days make for comfortable fishing and a mix of dry fly and nymph opportunities. This is also the most popular time for out-of-state visitors, so book early.

Fall (September–October)

Our personal favorite. Crowds thin out, the canyon turns gold and red, and Brown trout become increasingly aggressive as spawn approaches. Lower flows mean a more intimate experience and some of the best chances at big fish of the year. Don't sleep on a fall float.

Winter (November–April)

Yes, we fish in winter. The tailwater keeps temperatures fishable, and midges are the name of the game. Crowds are nearly nonexistent and the canyon is stunning in the cold. For the serious angler, a winter float is a bucket list experience.

What to Expect on the Day

Your adventure starts at Ed's Fly Shop at 432 E Main St in Montrose, where you'll meet your guide, sort your gear, and go over the plan for the day. From there it's a short drive to the put-in and you're on the water.

The Lower Gunnison features mild Class II water. This is a fishing float, not a whitewater adventure. Your guide handles all the rowing and navigation while you focus entirely on casting and catching. Expect a full day on the water with a riverside lunch break and as many drifts through productive water as the day allows.

Before your trip, your guide will call you to go over details, answer questions, and make sure you're prepared. We recommend arriving in Montrose the night before and staying locally. Ask us for lodging recommendations when you book.

What to Bring

Polarized sunglasses (essential for spotting fish and protecting your eyes)

Sunscreen and lip balm (the canyon reflects a lot of sun)

Layered clothing (mornings can be cool even in summer and afternoons warm up fast)

       A hat with a brim

Your own rod and reel if you have one (we provide all terminal tackle and flies)

A valid Colorado fishing license (purchase online before your trip)

Water bottle (we provide water for the day)

Camera or phone for photos (you will want them)
