Scott Fly Rods: Built in Our Backyard

Most fly shops sell Scott rods. We do something none of the big online dealers can. We sell them from the same town where they are made.

Every Scott fly rod in the world is built by hand right here in Montrose, Colorado. Not designed here and built overseas. Built here. The blanks are rolled, cured, finished, and assembled in a building on Air Park Way, a few minutes from our front door. The cork grips are turned and shaped in that same building. When you pick up a Scott rod in our shop, you are holding something that was made by people who live in our community and fish the same rivers we do.

A fifty year story that ended up in Montrose

Scott started in 1973 in a basement in San Francisco. Harry Wilson was chasing a better fly rod, and he ended up pioneering some of the ideas the whole industry still uses today, including the first five piece backpacking rod. Over the years the company moved from California to Colorado, and in the early 1990s it landed in Montrose, where it has been ever since.

That is not a small detail. Scott could build rods anywhere. They choose to build them by hand, in the United States, in a small Colorado town, and they back every one with a lifetime warranty. In a world where most gear is made as cheaply as possible somewhere far away, Scott went the other direction. We respect that, and it is a big part of why we are proud to carry them.

Why buying a Scott from us is different

Here is the honest pitch. You can buy a Scott rod from a dozen websites. What you cannot get from those websites is any of this:

• We fish them on our home water. Our guides carry Scott rods on the Gunnison, the Uncompahgre, and the San Miguel every week. When we tell you how a Centric loads or how a Session throws a hopper dropper, that is not a spec sheet talking. That is us fishing the rod the day before.

• You can cast one before you buy it. Come into the shop, string one up, and feel the difference between models in your own hand. That is worth more than any review.

• Warranty support down the road. If anything ever happens to your rod, the company that fixes it is right down the street, and we can help you get it there.

• You are keeping it local. Your money stays close to the people who built the rod.
