Regal Engineering Fly Tying Vises
Collection Description
The story of Ed's Fly Shop starts with a Regal vise. Back in 2010, before there was a storefront on Main Street and before we had a guide program, Ed was tying flies in his basement on a Regal vise built about a hundred miles away. The local machine shop that made them asked him to start selling vises out of his basement, and that one product line is what eventually turned into the shop you see today. Fifteen years later, we still carry the full Regal lineup, and we still recommend a Regal to anyone who wants one vise that will outlast them.
Regal vises are not the cheapest fly tying vises on the market. They are the ones most likely to be passed down. The hook holding mechanism is the famous Regal head, a self-adjusting jaw that grips a size 22 midge or a 5/0 streamer hook with the same casual confidence and no fiddly adjustments between flies. Open the head, drop in the hook, and tie. That is it. The mechanism has been around long enough to be widely imitated, and not yet improved on.
The Medallion is the flagship, the iconic Regal silhouette with a 360 degree axis, 220 degree articulation, and the broadest range of head and base options in the lineup. It is the vise you buy when you are buying for life. The Revolution is the same engineering with true in-line rotary function, so you can wind materials around the hook or lock the barrel and tie in the traditional method depending on the pattern. The Travel series packs the same jaw and the same craftsmanship into a compact base that fits in a boat bag, a backpack, or a piece of luggage, with a redesigned stem and center of gravity that holds steady even on a kitchen table in a cabin.
Across all three series, you can choose your head and your base independently. The Traditional head is the workhorse, sized for hooks 22 to 1/0 and the one we recommend for most freshwater tyers. The Big Game head opens up to size 5/0 and tackles saltwater patterns from tarpon to musky. The Midge head is built for the smallest hooks. The Shank head is purpose-built for tube pins and articulated shank flies. Bases include the Bronze Pocket, Bronze Traditional, Aluminum Pocket, and C-Clamp, so you can match the vise to your bench, your travel setup, or both with separate bases for the same head.
We also carry the Regal Vise Case, replacement parts, and accessories, because a vise this nicely made deserves to be protected when it travels and serviced when it needs it.
Stop by Ed's Fly Shop on Main Street in Montrose to see the full Regal lineup in person. We will pull a few off the shelf, walk you through the head and base options, and help you pick the configuration that fits the flies you actually tie.
