A shop spool of Dacron backing. This is the bulk spool — the one that lives on the bench and lines reel after reel — not a single retail spool. If you're outfitting a guide fleet, a rental fleet, or you simply spool a lot of reels, buying backing in bulk is far cheaper per reel.
Dacron is the sensible default for trout and most freshwater work. It's low-stretch, easy on your hands compared to gel spun, and forgiving to knot. Backing fills the arbor so your fly line comes off at a larger diameter with less memory, and it gives a good fish somewhere to go.
