Headline: The freshwater reel Abel built after moving to trout country, in a Casey Underwood artist edition we are proud to stock just down the street from the Abel factory.

The Abel SDF (Sealed Drag Fresh) 5/6 was Fly Fisherman Magazine's Best New Freshwater Reel for 2018 and Best of Show at the 2017 ICAST/IFTD trade show. Abel built it after relocating their operation here to Colorado, taking what they learned engineering the saltwater SDS and scaling the platform down for trout. The result is the best freshwater reel they have ever produced, and we are proud to carry it from our shop just down the road from where it is built.

This configuration features the Solid Deep Green frame with a matching Deep Green drag knob, paired with the Underwood Ridge Risers finish from artist Casey Underwood. The Ridge Risers design is individually laser engraved and hand-anodized, then sealed through Abel's protective finishing process so it holds up to drops, dings, and weather without fading. The walnut handle rounds out one of the more striking color combinations in the current SDF lineup.

Under the surface, the SDF runs the same stainless steel and carbon fluoropolymer sealed drag system Abel uses on their saltwater reels. Drag pressure ranges from zero to 10 pounds with an adjustment range almost three times greater than the original SD, and the system has virtually zero startup inertia, so a fish that turns and runs hits a smooth, predictable resistance instead of a jolt. The large arbor picks up line faster and cuts down on memory in cold weather.
