Douglas Outdoors
Douglas is the rod brand that keeps beating more expensive rods in blind casting tests. The Sky G has taken Best Overall 5-Weight and Best Overall 6-Weight in the Yellowstone Angler shootouts, and the DXF has won Best Mid-Priced 6-Weight — results that put them alongside rods costing considerably more.
Owned and run by the Barclay family, who came to rod building through conservation work on New York's Salmon River.
The lineup we carry
| Series | Where it fits |
|---|---|
| Sky G | The flagship. Lightest and most refined rod Douglas builds, and the shootout winner |
| Sky | The original premium series — a touch more forgiving than the G |
| DXF Gen2 | The current mid-priced workhorse. The generation that won its class |
| ERA | Value-focused without feeling like a budget rod |
| LRS | Four-piece, entry price point |
| Upstream Plus | Short-range small-stream work |
| Upstream Ultra-Lite | The lightest of the small-stream rods — tight brushy water |
The warranty is genuinely one of the better ones. Every Douglas rod carries a limited lifetime warranty to the original owner with proof of purchase, covering manufacturing defects at no charge. Beyond that they run a no-fault replacement programme for damage that is your own fault — the car door, the ceiling fan, the tailgate. That runs $45 per section on 4, 5 and 6-piece fly rods plus $20 shipping per order, or $50 per section on 2-piece rods plus $38. Douglas turns most claims around in about seven business days within the contiguous US.
Two things worth knowing: the warranty is original owner only, so a used Douglas off the classifieds is not covered. And once a series is discontinued, rods stay warrantable only while parts last.
Which one? If you are choosing between the Sky G and the DXF Gen2, the honest answer is that most anglers cannot tell the difference at 30 feet — the G separates itself at distance and in wind. Come cast both. We keep them strung at the shop, or call 970-964-9991 and we will talk through the water you actually fish.
