Benchmade True Paring Knife in Maple Valley Richlite — Detail Work, Done Right
Core fruit. Peel potatoes. Pare like a pro. The 4045-02 True Paring Knife is built for the small, precise tasks that a full-size chef knife can't handle — coring tomatoes, deveining shrimp, peeling apples, paring vegetables, butterflying chicken thighs. At just 2.33 ounces with a 4.12" CPM-154 stainless blade and Benchmade's proprietary SelectEdge® geometry, this is chef-level finesse in a knife you can carry from the backyard BBQ to the campsite cutting board to the cabin kitchen. Made in Oregon City. Backed for life.
The Detail Knife in Benchmade's Kitchen Line
If a chef knife is the workhorse, the paring knife is the surgical tool. The 4045-02 is built for the tasks where the 8" Chef Knife is too long, too heavy, or too unwieldy:
- Coring an apple or tomato
- Peeling potatoes, ginger, garlic, or carrots
- Deveining shrimp or trimming silver skin off backstrap
- Removing eyes from potatoes or stems from strawberries
- Cutting precise garnishes for plating
- Butterflying chicken thighs or pork tenderloin
- Trimming fat from steaks or trimming the dark line from a salmon fillet
For these jobs, you want a small, lightweight, surgically sharp blade you can control with one hand. That's exactly what the True Paring delivers.
CPM-154 SelectEdge® Blade
The 4.12" blade is forged from CPM-154 stainless steel, the same premium powder-metallurgy steel Benchmade uses across their kitchen line and many of their EDC folders. It hardens to 58-61 HRC — sharp enough to slice cleanly, durable enough to take real use, and easy enough to resharpen that even an inexperienced sharpener can keep it in working order.
The acute clip-point geometry gives this paring knife two key features:
- Precision tip control: The angled spine creates a fine, sharp tip ideal for piercing, scoring, and detail work — like opening packaging, removing eyes from potatoes, or making cuts inside fruit without slicing through to the other side.
- A flat cutting edge: Despite the clip point, the cutting edge stays flat enough for clean rocking motions on a cutting board.
The stonewash finish on the blade — different from the satin finish on the matching Chef Knife — gives the paring a more textured, utilitarian look. Stonewashing also helps hide minor scratches and patina that develop with everyday use, which is appropriate for a knife that gets handled constantly during prep.
SelectEdge® Geometry
Benchmade sharpens the True Paring with their proprietary SelectEdge® technology — a 14° per side grind that's significantly more acute than standard kitchen knives (which typically run 17-20°). The result: chef-level sharpness in a paring knife. Vegetables peel without tearing. Fruit cores cleanly without crushing. Garnish work happens with confidence rather than guesswork.
For paring tasks specifically, this acute angle matters more than on a chef knife. Paring is about precision more than power — and a sharper edge translates directly to better control on small, detailed cuts.
Maple Valley Richlite Handle
The handle is Maple Valley Richlite scales with a Black G10 bolster, matching the look of the rest of Benchmade's Maple Valley kitchen line. Richlite is a paper composite material that's compressed and resin-sealed — it looks like wood, feels like wood, but is more durable, fully waterproof, food-safe, and tolerant of regular kitchen use.
One unique characteristic of Richlite: it develops a natural patina over time. As the handle is exposed to light and use, the warm tones deepen and shift. Each handle ends up with subtle character that sets it apart from every other knife — the patina darkens or lightens depending on light exposure, oils from your hands, and the conditions of your kitchen. After a few years, your paring knife will tell its own story.
For a paring knife specifically, the handle ergonomics matter more than on bigger blades because you'll be choking up close to the blade for fine work. The Richlite scales are sized and shaped to fit comfortably in a controlled grip — small enough to maneuver, large enough to actually hold without your fingers pinching against the bolster.
Lightweight, Balanced for Detail Work
At just 2.33 oz (66g), the True Paring is genuinely lightweight — about the weight of an empty stainless steel travel mug, or three AA batteries. That matters because paring is fatigue work. You're not making big chops; you're making dozens of small, precise cuts in a row. A heavy knife wears out your hand. A light, balanced knife lets you pare for an hour without your forearm cramping.
The balance point sits right where the blade meets the handle, which means the knife feels neutral in your hand — neither blade-heavy nor handle-heavy. It moves where you want it to move, and stops where you want it to stop.
Boltaron® Blade Guard Included
Like the rest of Benchmade's Maple Valley kitchen line, the True Paring comes with a folded and riveted Boltaron® blade guard. Boltaron is a high-impact thermoplastic similar to Kydex — it's tough, lightweight, and snaps securely over the blade for safe storage and transport.
For a paring knife, the blade guard isn't just for travel — it's also for kitchen drawer storage. A 2.33 oz knife getting tossed in with cutlery is going to dull on contact with other utensils. The Boltaron guard protects the edge, protects you, and protects the rest of your drawer from getting nicked.

What This Knife Does Best
- Coring: Tomatoes, apples, peppers — pop the core out cleanly with the clip-point tip
- Peeling: Potatoes, carrots, ginger, fruit — close-quarters work without a vegetable peeler
- Detailing: Trimming fat, deveining shrimp, removing silver skin from game
- Garnishing: Precision cuts for plating, herb work, citrus zest peeling
- Camp cooking: A pocket-sized chef's tool that works anywhere, from cabin kitchens to backcountry base camps
- Fish prep: Removing pin bones, butterflying small fillets, scoring fish skin
Pairs Beautifully With the Chef Knife
While this knife stands alone, it shares the same Maple Valley Richlite handle aesthetic as Benchmade's stand-alone Chef Knife (4025-02). Together, they form a compelling two-knife kitchen setup:
- Benchmade Chef Knife (4025-02) — 8.17" blade for the heavy lifting
- Benchmade True Paring (4045-02) — 4.12" blade for detail work
Two knives. Two specialized roles. Matching aesthetics. American-made, lifetime warrantied. For most home cooks, this combination handles 95% of kitchen prep — no need for a 12-piece block set when two great knives cover the work.
Pro Dealer Notes
Ed's Fly Shop is a Benchmade Pro Dealer — the highest dealer tier Benchmade offers. That means we get early access to releases, deeper inventory, and a direct relationship with Benchmade's team for any customer questions or warranty issues. Your purchase from us comes with full authorized dealer warranty backing, the same as buying directly from Oregon City.
The Lifetime Warranty + LifeSharp
Like every Benchmade we sell, the 4045-02 True Paring Knife is backed by:
- Benchmade Lifetime Warranty: Manufacturing defects covered for the life of the knife. Free repair or replacement.
- LifeSharp Service: Free sharpening, cleaning, oiling, and adjustment for as long as you own the knife. Send it to Oregon City, get it back razor sharp at no charge.
For a paring knife that gets used daily, the LifeSharp service is genuinely valuable. Paring blades dull faster than chef knives because they're used for tighter, more cutting board-contact work. With Benchmade, you ship it to Oregon City when it dulls, get it back factory-sharp, and never pay for sharpening again.
Care Notes
- Hand wash, hand dry. Even though Richlite is water-tolerant, a long soak isn't great for any premium knife.
- Avoid the dishwasher. Heat, harsh detergents, and rattling against other utensils will damage both edge and handle finish.
- Use a wood or soft plastic cutting board. Glass, stone, and ceramic surfaces dull SelectEdge geometry quickly.
- Store with the Boltaron guard on. Drawer storage without the guard means inevitable edge damage.
- Touch up the edge with a ceramic rod or strop between LifeSharp services. Avoid pull-through sharpeners — they can damage the SelectEdge angle.
- Embrace the patina. The Richlite handle will darken and develop character over time. Don't try to "restore" it — it's a feature, not a flaw.
