Exclusively at Ed's Fly Shop. If you've fished a Scott Radian, you already know why this rod matters — it's long been called the greatest 9' 5wt trout rod ever built. The Canyon 905 FB picks up right where the Radian left off, built on that same legacy, but brought back with real upgrades and a few tricks of its own that you won't find anywhere else.
The first thing you'll notice is the fighting butt — not something you typically see on a 5wt. We added it on purpose. Out in the canyons, you're climbing over boulders, kneeling in the river to net a fish, setting your rod down wherever you can — and that fighting butt keeps your reel up off the rocks and out of the dirt. It also gives you a real point of leverage, so when a good fish gets into fast water or drops into a rapid, you've got the control to turn its head and the relief in your casting hand to fight it out instead of muscling through on the foregrip alone.
Finish & Cosmetics
- Cocobolo wood reel seat with a matte black anodized window
- Signature Radian-orange thread wraps, paired with dark maroon wraps that match the reel seat
- Measuring marks built right into the wraps at 14" and 20" — a quick reference for fly or fish length streamside
Built-In Features
- Snake Brand universal snake guides — stainless steel with E-Coating for the industry's smoothest finish, cutting friction for faster line speed and longer casts
- Titanium tangle-free stripping guides with Silicon Nitride inserts — shoot farther and resist line tangles on the retrieve
- Large loop tip top — added shooting distance with easy knot clearance
What really sets this rod apart is how much ground it covers, and how well it covers it. Rig up a long leader and a midge and it'll protect 6X tippet all day on technical, slow-moving water where one bad hookset means a lost fish. Hop a terrestrial tight against an undercut bank and it has the touch to lay it down soft. Drop a salmonfly with a rubber-leg dropper down through the canyon walls and it has the backbone to punch that heavier rig into the wind and control the drift through pocket water. Strip an articulated streamer through that same pocket water for the aggressive ones and it has the power in the butt section to turn a fish before it reaches structure. And when the fish are holding deep in slow water, it roll-casts a heavy nymph rig with a tight, accurate loop — no back-cast required. Most 5wts ask you to pick one of these; the Canyon does all of them well.
Where this rod really shines is in the canyons. It packs down easier than most 9'6" rods, so it travels well, but it doesn't give up an inch of back-cast or roll-cast distance to get there. And when you're boxed in by steep canyon walls — our own Black Canyon of the Gunnison is the perfect example — where there's no room for a full back-cast, the Canyon's roll-casting performance is where it really earns its name.
We've fished this rod ourselves right here in the shop's home water and beyond — trout, bass, panfish, pike, carp, even kokanee salmon have all come tight on the other end of it. It handles every one of them with ease. This isn't just a trout rod that happens to also catch other fish; it's a true do-it-all rod that deserves a permanent spot in your quiver.
Every Canyon 905 FB is precision-engineered with Scott's advanced resin system, giving you a blank that's light enough to fish comfortably all day and tough enough to handle whatever you throw at it. Built for the angler who's always planning the next trip — this rod is ready for the adventure the moment you pick it up.
