Echo Base Fly Reel

One of the best fly reels you can buy under $50. The Echo Base proves you don't have to spend hundreds of dollars to get into fly fishing the right way. Impact-resistant composite frame, Rulon disc drag, stainless steel internals, and a price point that makes it the obvious choice for new anglers, backup setups, and rods you don't want to risk a premium reel on. Three sizes cover 2 weight trout creeks all the way up through 8 weight bass and steelhead applications.

Built for Real Fishing at a Real Price

The Base isn't a toy. The composite frame is genuinely impact-resistant — it'll survive being dropped on rocks, knocked off a boat seat, or stuffed in a pack with the rest of your gear. The drag system uses the same Rulon disc material found on Echo's higher-end reels, paired with stainless steel internals that won't corrode after a season of use. Echo's been making fly gear for serious anglers for decades, and they know that an entry-level price point doesn't mean entry-level engineering.

Maintenance-Free Rulon Disc Drag

The Base's Rulon disc drag delivers smooth, dependable stopping power with low start-up resistance — meaning the drag engages cleanly without that initial jerk that can pop tippets on big fish runs. The system is maintenance-free and backlash-free thanks to a one-way roller clutch, with audible incoming and outgoing clicks. The 4/5 size delivers about 5 pounds of maximum drag pressure, which is plenty for any trout, panfish, or freshwater bass you'll encounter.

Large Arbor for Fast Pickup

The Base uses a large arbor design to speed line retrieval and reduce line memory. The vented spool reduces weight and lets line and backing dry between trips. Convertible left-or-right-hand retrieve means it works for any angler.

Three Sizes for Every Setup

The Base is available in three sizes covering 2 through 8 weight applications. The 2/3 is ideal for small stream and panfish setups, the 4/5 is the all-around trout choice, and the 6/8 handles bass, light salt, smaller steelhead, and light salmon.

Why Anglers Choose the Echo Base

  • Best fly reel under $50 — premium features at a starter price

  • Stainless steel internals resist corrosion through hundreds of trips
  • Large arbor design for fast line pickup and reduced line memory
  • Three sizes covering 2 through 8 weight applications
  • Convertible retrieve works for left- or right-hand anglers
  • Backed by Echo's 12-month warranty
  • Perfect backup reel for the truck, boat, or gear bag

Honest Notes

  • This is a composite (resin) frame, not machined aluminum. That's how Echo keeps the price under $50. The trade-off: it's not as polished or durable in the long run as a $200 machined reel. But for a beginner, a backup, or a rod you don't want to baby, that's the right trade-off.
  • The drag is unsealed, so it's not built for prolonged saltwater use. A quick rinse after a salt trip will keep it running, but the Base is at its best in freshwater.
  • Echo's 12-month limited warranty covers manufacturer defects. For a reel at this price point, that's a solid commitment.
