Picking one
- First serious rod? The 590-4. A fast 9-foot 5 weight is the most useful trout rod there is, and this one will not hold you back as you improve.
- Streamers and wind? The 690-4 or the 691-4 with the fighting butt.
- Steelhead or lakes? The 10-foot 7 weight — extra reach for mending and indicator work.
- Salt on a budget? The 8 and 9 weights are honest saltwater rods with corrosion-safe hardware.
Where it sits in Sage's range
Above the Foundation sit the Sonic-class rods and then the R8 Core, Sage's flagship. The R8 buys you a lighter, better-tracking blank and premium hardware, and if this rod is going to be your main stick for a decade, cast one against the Foundation before deciding — we stock the full R8 lineup too. But as a first Sage or a do-everything workhorse, the Foundation is the strongest value in their catalog.
