Orvis Hydros Fly Reel — A Best-Selling Reel, Refined and Made Better

The Orvis Hydros reel is the result of Orvis setting out to take an already great reel and improve it. They removed unnecessary material to reduce the weight, and stiffened the narrow spool to minimize line stacking. The result is a lighter, sharper version of a proven design.

Every change on the Hydros is a refinement of something that already worked. The drag knob was reshaped to be more ergonomically accessible and comfortable in hand. The seal on the sealed drag was refined to better protect the clutch bearing in the drag mechanism. The reel foot was radiused, as on the Orvis Mirage, for kink-free leader protection.

At its core is the part that did not need changing: the fully sealed Hydros drag system, built with stacked carbon and stainless steel disc washers. It remains one of the strongest drags in the industry, with zero startup inertia for an instant, smooth response. The standard large arbor size balances well with lighter-weight fly rods while still delivering excellent retrieval rates and less line coiling than a standard arbor reel.

The Hydros wears a durable matte type II anodized finish and is offered in five sizes, Hydros I through Hydros V, covering line weights from 1-3wt up to 9-11wt, in a range of colors. Refinement and improvement are the hallmarks of quality, and the Hydros is built to show it.
