Helios D is the distance-and-power half of Orvis's flagship series — line speed, lifting power, and backbone. Orvis calls it "the go-everywhere, fish-anything option for anglers demanding effortless all-day casting from a rod that pushes the bounds of durability." From wind on the Gunnison to double-hauling on a flat, this is the Helios that punches.

Fourth-generation Helios, seven years in development, and the engineering claims are specific: four times more accurate than Helios 3, 25% stronger, and 10% less levered swing weight. Strategic blank reinforcement raises hoop strength and damps vibration — which is what produced what Orvis calls the most significant reduction in tip displacement they have ever measured. Made in the USA at Orvis's Vermont rod shop.

We stock seventeen D models — 4 weight through 14 weight.

A note on weights: Orvis does not publish rod weights in ounces for this generation. We would rather say so than make numbers up — come by and we will put one on the shop scale.

Helios D or Helios F? Orvis's own chooser: D for increased line speed and lifting power, F for ultimate sensitivity and delicate presentations with tippet protection. Practically — D if you fight wind, throw streamers or heavy nymph rigs, or fish salt; F if you cast dries to picky trout on fine tippet or tight-line nymph. We stock both, and casting them side by side settles it in about four minutes.

Picking a D

  • Colorado all-arounder: the 9' 5 weight — Orvis's Trout Series D pick for when fish are farther out or the wind is up.
  • Nymph rig and drift boat: the 10' 5 or 6 weight.
  • One saltwater rod: the 9' 8 weight, their Big Game pick.
  • Tight quarters and quick shots: the 8'5" 7 or 8 weight — fast-loading for when one cast is all you get.
  • Tarpon and blue water: the 11, 12, and 14 weights, all on the rack.

Components

  • Type III anodized aluminum reel seat — burled hardwood insert on trout models, black aluminum on big game
  • Titanium stripping guides; REC recoil titanium snake guides
  • Composite gas pedal on big-game full-wells grips
  • Aluminum rod tube included
  • Made in USA — Orvis's Vermont rod shop

Warranty: the Orvis 25-Year Guarantee — if it breaks, they fix or replace it. Original owner, proof of purchase may be required, modest processing fee on repairs. Their Interchangeable Parts Program can ship a replacement tip or mid section in as little as five business days rather than a multi-week turnaround. Register the rod and keep the serial number on the reel seat.
