Helios F is the finesse half of Orvis's flagship series — built, in their words, for "increased sensitivity, elevated tippet protection, and game-of-inches feeding lane presentations." It is the rod for sipping trout on 6X, for the mend you make after the cast, for the fish that is twenty-two feet away and will not tolerate a sloppy landing.

This is the fourth-generation Helios, seven years in development, and Orvis's engineering claims are unusually specific: four times more accurate than Helios 3, 25% stronger, and 10% less levered swing weight. Strategic reinforcement in the blank increases hoop strength and kills vibration, which is what actually produces the reduction in tip displacement they measured. Made in the USA at Orvis's Vermont rod shop.

We stock twelve F models — 2 weight through 8 weight, 7'6" through 11'.

A note on weights: Orvis does not publish rod weights in ounces for this generation, and we would rather tell you that than invent numbers. Come by the shop and we will put one on the scale, or better, put one in your hand.

Helios F or Helios D? Orvis's own chooser: D for increased line speed and lifting power, F for ultimate sensitivity and delicate presentations with tippet protection. In practice — if you fish dry flies to picky trout, protect light tippet, or tight-line nymph, take the F. If you are casting into Colorado wind, throwing streamers, or fishing salt, take the D. Both are stocked here, and we would rather you cast both than guess.

Picking an F

  • The one most people want: the 9' 5 weight — Orvis's own Trout Series pick for casting dries on light tippet.
  • Small water: the 7'6" 3 weight, their Small-Stream Finesse pick.
  • Euro nymphing: the 10' or 11' 3 weight, with the downlocking seat that balances a long rod properly.
  • Technical spring creeks: the 8'6" 4 weight.

Components

  • Type III anodized aluminum reel seat with burled hardwood insert on trout models
  • Titanium stripping guides; REC recoil titanium snake guides
  • Aluminum rod tube included
  • Made in USA — Orvis's Vermont rod shop

Warranty: the Orvis 25-Year Guarantee — if it breaks, they fix or replace it. Original owner, proof of purchase may be required, and there is a modest processing fee on repairs. Worth knowing: Orvis's Interchangeable Parts Program can ship a replacement tip or mid section in as little as five business days instead of a multi-week rebuild. Register the rod to your Orvis account and keep the serial number on the reel seat.

Ed's Fly Shop, 432 E Main St, downtown Montrose, Colorado. We keep Helios on the rack so you can cast before you commit.
