The Mighty Mite is Orvis's outfit built specifically for young anglers — an 8-foot 5 weight scaled and balanced so a kid can actually load it, rigged and ready to fish out of the box.
Why 8 feet and a 5 weight? Shorter is easier to control and easier to keep out of the willows. A 5 weight line has enough mass that a young caster feels the rod load, which is the single thing that makes casting click. Kid outfits that are too long and too light are why children decide they are bad at this and go do something else.

Bring them in. We will let a kid cast this on the lawn out front before you buy it, set the reel up for their hand, and show them the one knot they need. Ten minutes at the counter is worth more than anything we can write here, and we genuinely enjoy this part of the job.
