The Hydros is Orvis's best-selling freshwater reel, rebuilt for 2026. If you have fished an older Hydros, this is the same workhorse with a fully sealed drag, a larger arbor, and a machined aluminum handle in place of the old Delrin one.
Read this first if you already own a Hydros: the 2026 frame is a complete redesign. Spools from previous Hydros models will not fit this reel, and this reel's spools will not fit your older one. If you are buying a spare spool, make sure it is the matching generation.
What changed for 2026
- Fully sealed drag — water stays out even with the spool removed
- 5% larger arbor — faster pickup without a bigger reel footprint
- Machined aluminum handle — replaces Delrin, better grip, less hand fatigue
- Redesigned drag knob — easier to adjust mid-fight
- Tool-free hand conversion — switch left or right retrieve with a knurled knob, no tools

Which size do I need?
- Size II — trout and panfish on 3, 4 or 5 weight rods. The small-stream and dry-fly choice, light enough to protect fine tippet.
- Size III — the do-everything size. Trout on a 5 or 6 weight, bass, small bonefish. If you are not sure, this is usually the one.
- Size IV — 7 to 9 weight. Big bass, streamers, inshore saltwater like snook and jacks, and trout spey setups.
Zero startup inertia matters more than it sounds. When a fish bolts, the spool begins turning immediately instead of jerking against a stuck drag — which is what breaks light tippet on the first run.
