The Recon is Orvis's USA-made mid-tier rod — built in the same Vermont rod shop as Helios, at a price well below it. This is the current freshwater generation, redesigned with updated tapers and cosmetics.
For a lot of anglers the Recon is the sweet spot in the Orvis line: American-built, backed by the 25-year guarantee, and noticeably more refined than the imported rods below it without asking flagship money.

Picking one
- All-around trout: the 9' 4 weight.
- Euro nymphing: the 10' 3 weight — a serious tight-line rod that happens to be made in Vermont.
- Technical dry fly: the 8'6" 4 weight.
Where it sits in the Orvis line. Clearwater is the imported value rod built on Helios tapers. Recon is the American-made step up. Helios D and F are the flagship, with the new blank Orvis measured as four times more accurate than Helios 3. We stock all three tiers, and the honest answer about which one you need comes from casting them, not reading about them.
Warranty: the Orvis 25-Year Guarantee. Original owner, proof of purchase may be required, modest processing fee on repairs. The Interchangeable Parts Program can turn a broken tip around in about five business days.
