The Abel TR brings back a true classic, the click-pawl trout reel, rebuilt with a striking modern design and the kind of detail only Abel puts into a reel. The partial porting of the frame draws straight from the Abel lineage, and the features are as inventive as anything the company has ever built. For us, this one is personal: every TR is machined right here in Montrose, the same town as our shop, by Abel's own crew of trout junkies.
This particular TR wears Derek DeYoung's Rainbow Flank finish, a rainbow trout pattern that wraps the frame in the colors of the fish you are chasing. Paired with a warm rosewood handle, it is as much a piece of art as it is a fishing tool.
At the heart is a precision-balanced, dual-pawl clicker integrated into the spool, which does away with a counterweight for a clean look while keeping that iconic click-pawl sound. The mechanical incoming click complements the smooth, audible feel of the outgoing drag, and the carbon and stainless multi-disk system delivers substantial resistance with enough fine adjustment to protect delicate tippet.
A large-arbor spool cuts line memory and speeds up your retrieve, while the pronounced palming rim lets you feather drag pressure by hand in any condition. The partially ported frame strikes the balance of weight, sound, and looks Abel is known for, with milled silhouettes of a stonefly, caddis, and mayfly hidden inside. Just 21 meticulously machined parts, a quick-change threaded spool, and machined stainless accents on the frame and spool round out a reel built to fish for a lifetime, built in the USA.
