Picking one
- First good rod? The 9' 5 weight. It is the most useful trout rod anyone can own.
- Small water? The 8' 3 weight or 8'6" 4 weight — short enough for brushy creeks, soft enough to protect light tippet.
- Streamers and warmwater? The 7 or 8 weight. Both throw heavy flies and sink tips without complaint.
- Nymphing or stillwater? The 10-foot models. Extra length buys mending and line control you cannot get from a 9-footer.
Where the Session sits in Scott's range
Scott builds a laddered lineup, and the Session is the entry point into it. Above it sit the Centric and the GT Series, both of which add recovery speed, stability at distance, and upgraded componentry — titanium guides, milled reel seats, Flor grade cork.
The honest advice: if a rod is going to be your main stick for the next decade, cast the Centric alongside this one before you decide. The difference is real and most people feel it inside a few casts. We stock every model of both, so there is no reason to guess.
