Felt: the case for and against
On slick, algae-covered rock, felt grips better than any rubber compound made. Anglers who wade heavy water and have gone down once tend to stay loyal to it, and that is a reasonable position.
The cost is biosecurity. Felt stays wet and holds mud and organisms for days, which makes it the best-known carrier of whirling disease spores and didymo from one drainage to the next. Several states have banned felt outright. Colorado has not, but whirling disease has a genuine history in these waters.
Our honest recommendation: if you fish one home river, felt is a good choice — just scrub, rinse, and let the boots dry completely between trips. If you move between the Gunnison, the Uncompahgre, and the San Miguel in a given week, take the rubber version of this same boot and add studs. We stock both, and the rubber is the version we sell more of for good reason.
Sizing: wading boots go on over your wader booties, so plan on roughly a full size up from your street shoe, with half sizes rounding up. Too tight compresses the neoprene and gives you cold feet inside an hour.
