Hareline Ultra Chenille Micro is the body material behind the San Juan Worm, and the smallest diameter Hareline offers. The micro size keeps a worm pattern in proportion on a size 14 or 16 scud hook instead of the bulky size 10 look most shops end up with, and it burns to a clean taper with a lighter so the ends don't fray out in the drift.
Why It Works:
Ultra chenille is a dense, velvety pile on a tight core. It soaks just enough water to sink without wicking the fly down like yarn, and the pile holds its color wet — which is why a Worm Brown fly still reads brown at four feet instead of washing out gray.
Product Features:
- Micro diameter — correct proportion on size 14–18 hooks
- Dense pile on a tight core; takes a lighter-burned taper cleanly
- Sinks readily without soaking up water like yarn
- Equally at home on worms, micro eggs, mop-style bodies and small leech tails
- Italian made, sold by the card
Ed's Take:
Worm Brown is what we tie on when the Gunnison comes up off a storm — it's the natural, un-fluorescent version of the worm and it outfishes hot pink more often than anyone wants to admit. Fl. Pink and Red are the high-water confidence colors, and Shell Pink is quietly the best micro egg material we stock. Tie them on a 2.3mm or 2.8mm tungsten bead and run them under a dry in the spring.
