Best 5 Weight Fly Rods of 2026: Our Picks from Montrose

If you only own one trout rod in Western Colorado, it should probably be a 9 foot 5 weight. It will throw a size 18 dry on the Uncompahgre, carry a two nymph rig with an indicator on the Gunnison, and still handle a small streamer when the water comes up. That is why it is the first rod we recommend to most trout anglers.

The hard part is not deciding on a 5 weight. It is choosing between a dozen very good ones. So here are the 5 weights we stock and sell the most of, what each one is actually built to do, and who we would hand it to.

We sell every rod on this list. Nobody here is paid to push one brand over another, and three of these rods are built right here in Montrose.

1. Scott Centric: best overall

The Centric is our best selling premium trout rod, and it earns that spot by being good at everything. Scott calls the action fast with a responsive, easy flexing tip, and that combination is exactly what a Western Colorado 5 weight needs. The tip lets you feel a short cast to a rising fish. The fast action gives you the power to punch a nymph rig into the wind on the Gorge or mend a long line across braided current.

Scott designed it for dries, nymphing, roll casts and single hand spey, and that list is not marketing filler. It is the rod we would hand to someone who only wants to buy one.

Built: Handcrafted by Scott in Montrose, Colorado, with Scott's lifetime warranty for the original owner.

2. Sage R8 Core: most versatile

Sage calls the R8 Core its most versatile and most popular rod, and it is the rod the Centric gets cross shopped against more than any other. It is a fast action rod built on Sage's Revolution 8 technology, with a feel that stays smooth even when you push it.

If you fish a little of everything and want a rod that does not ask you to change your casting stroke when you switch from a dry dropper to a streamer, the R8 Core is a strong answer. The honest way to choose between it and the Centric is to cast both, because they solve the same problem with a slightly different feel.

Built: One at a time on Bainbridge Island, Washington, with a lifetime warranty for the original owner.

3. Winston Air 2: best for anglers who fish by feel

Winston has a long reputation with anglers who care how a rod feels as much as what it can do. The Air 2 is Winston's flagship freshwater rod, built for versatility across dries, nymphs and streamers, finished with a burled wood reel seat.

Winston rates the Air 2 as fast, but it is a fast rod that still lets you feel the line load. If you want a premium rod that you will enjoy casting for its own sake, this is the one.

Built: Designed and handcrafted in Twin Bridges, Montana, with Winston's lifetime guarantee for the original owner.

4. Orvis Helios F: best for delicate presentations

The current Helios comes in two versions, and the letter matters. The Helios D is built for distance and lifting power. The Helios F is built for finesse: sensitivity, soft presentations and tippet protection. For a 5 weight on technical trout water, the F is the one we point people to.

On the Pa Co Chu Puk tailwater of the Uncompahgre, where the fish are selective and the tippet is light, a rod built to protect 6X is worth more than one built to throw the whole line.

Built: In the Orvis rod shop in Manchester, Vermont, with Orvis's 25 year guarantee.

5. Scott GT: best for dry flies and smaller water

The GT is Scott's answer for anglers who want a slower, more connected rod. It replaces the G Series, and Scott describes it as a medium flex with fast recovery, built for smooth progressive actions, feedback and tippet protection. It is graphite, not glass. Scott's glass rods are the separate F Series.

There is no 9 foot 5 weight GT. The 5 weight comes in 7'10" for small creeks, 8'10" as the everyday dry fly length, and 9'8" when you need a little more reach. If most of your fishing is dry flies to rising trout, the 8'10" is the one we would look at first.

Built: Handcrafted in Montrose, Colorado, each one hand inscribed with a serial number, with Scott's lifetime warranty.

6. Douglas Sky G: best premium value

The Sky G is Douglas's top rod, and it is the one that makes people rethink what a premium rod has to cost. Douglas builds it with graphene in the blank, calls the action moderate fast, and lists the 9 foot 5 weight at 2.7 ounces, which is light for a rod with this much backbone.

Douglas designed it for both delicate presentations and distance casting, and the moderate fast action makes it easier to cast well for anglers who are still building their stroke.

Built: Made in Korea, with Douglas's limited lifetime warranty for the original owner.

7. Scott Session: best middle of the road rod

The Session is the Scott we recommend when someone wants a rod built in Montrose but does not need the flagship. Scott calls it fast with feel and a true do it all rod, and it shares the same basic ideas as the Centric in a simpler package.

For a lot of anglers, this is the sweet spot: a rod good enough that you will never outgrow it, built a few minutes from our front door.

Built: Handcrafted in Montrose, Colorado, with Scott's lifetime warranty for the original owner.

8. Douglas DXF Gen2: best value moderate fast rod

The second generation DXF came out in 2024 as a lightweight, sensitive update to a rod that was already one of the best values in fly fishing. Douglas calls the action moderate fast, and the whole point of the rod is feel: you can sense the line load without needing a perfect stroke.

If the budget points you away from the flagships but you still want a rod that feels refined, the DXF Gen2 is where we would start.

Built: Made in Korea, with Douglas's limited lifetime warranty for the original owner.

9. Orvis Clearwater: best for beginners

Every year we set up a lot of first rods, and the Clearwater is one we trust for it. It is an all around trout rod with a forgiving medium fast action that helps a new caster feel what the rod is doing. It also makes a great backup rod for the truck or the drift boat.

Most important, it is backed by the same 25 year Orvis guarantee as rods that cost a lot more, which matters when a new angler inevitably meets a car door.

Built: Designed in Vermont and imported, with Orvis's 25 year guarantee.

How to choose your 5 weight

Action. Fast rods like the Centric, R8 Core and Session generate line speed and fight the wind, which matters on big Western water. Moderate fast rods like the Sky G and DXF Gen2 are more forgiving and let you feel the rod load. Slower, finesse rods like the Helios F and GT protect light tippet and land dry flies softly. If you are not sure, a fast rod with a soft tip is the safest middle ground.

Length. Nine feet is the standard for good reason. It mends well, roll casts well and handles most rivers. Go shorter, around 8'6", for brushy creeks. Go longer, 9'6" or 10', if you nymph a lot or fish from a boat and want more line control.

Reel. A 9 foot 5 weight balances best with a light reel sized for a 5 weight line. In our shop that usually means a Ross Evolution LTX 4/5 or an Animas. We cover both in our Evolution LTX review and Animas review, and we compare Ross against Galvan and Lamson here.

Line. A fast rod often loads better with a line that runs a little heavy for its size. A moderate rod usually wants a true to weight line. Tell us what rod you are fishing and we will match the line to it.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 5 weight a good first fly rod?
Yes. For trout in Colorado it is the most versatile weight you can buy. A 9 foot 5 weight will handle nearly everything a new angler will fish in the first few seasons.

Can a 5 weight throw streamers?
Small ones, yes. A fast 5 weight like the Centric or R8 Core will handle small streamers and buggers. If you want to throw big articulated flies, step up to a 6 or 7 weight.

Fast or moderate?
Fast rods are better in wind and at distance. Moderate rods are easier to cast well at short and medium range and protect light tippet. Most Western anglers are best served by a fast rod with a soft tip, which is why the Centric tops this list.

What is the best 5 weight for the Gunnison?
For the Gorge and the Lower Gunnison, where you are often nymphing deep, casting in wind and fighting strong fish, we lean toward a fast 9 foot rod like the Centric, R8 Core or Session.

Which of these are made in Colorado?
The Scott Centric, Session and GT are all handcrafted by Scott in Montrose, the same town as our shop.
