The SSR is Orvis's Saltwater Sealed Reel — a straightforward, tough, sealed-drag reel for people who would rather spend their money on the trip than the tackle. Sizes III through V cover most saltwater and big-game freshwater work.

Why sealed matters here. Salt and sand destroy unsealed drags — not dramatically, just gradually, until one day the reel you trusted stutters on a good fish. A sealed drag keeps both out. The SSR is the least expensive way into a genuinely sealed Orvis reel.
