Light boots are a real trade, and it is worth understanding. A lighter boot is dramatically less tiring over a long day and on the hike in. What you give up is ankle stiffness and outright ruggedness. If you wade fast, heavy water like the Gunnison Gorge, or you are hard on gear, a heavier guide boot will serve you better. If most of your fishing involves walking to spots and moderate wading, the weight saving is the single biggest comfort upgrade available.
Sizing — the part people get wrong
Wading boots go on over your wader booties, so they need to be bigger than your street shoes — usually about a full size. Half sizes generally round up. Get this wrong and you either cut off circulation, which is how cold feet start, or swim in a boot that rolls your ankle.
Bring your waders and try them on over the top. That is the only reliable method, and it takes ten minutes. Call 970-964-9991 and we will have a couple of sizes pulled and waiting.
On soles in Colorado: rubber is the responsible default here. Felt grips slick rock better but carries whirling disease spores, didymo, and mud between drainages far more readily. Whatever you fish, clean and dry your boots between rivers.
